De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek – Law Assistant Arbitration

We are looking for a student who has a keen interest in international Arbitration.

You will be employed as a law assistant on a part-time basis, for 15 hours per week, for a period of atleast six-months.

The practice

This is a fantastic opportunity to get hands-on experience in an international law firm, which will undoubtedly help your understanding of the international Arbitration arena. We are looking for candidates that – like us – are passionate about this area of expertise, and who are interested in finding out more about the work that goes into supporting a commercial law firm.

Our globally renowned Arbitration practice operates across international borders and in different legal systems, across a variety of sectors on institutional, ad hoc and investor-state arbitrations. We focus on where we can make a difference. From energy majors and technology companies, through to financial institutions and States, our clients rely on us to handle their most complex and strategic cases. Are we the best? You would have to ask our clients and our peers what they think. Do we work on (and win) some of the largest and most complex disputes in the world? Absolutely.

Successful arbitration requires much more than just being experts in the law. Our team, the client and external industry experts all immerse ourselves in the full context of the case. The right dynamic can make all the difference. In understanding every chapter, issue, and theme that collides in the facts of the matter, we offer arbitrators our client’s story with conviction and legal pragmatism.

What you can expect as a law assistant

You will be working in a pool together with other law assistants of the practice. Your activities as a law assistant consist of a combination of ‘know-how’ related work and assisting lawyers in the group’s daily practice (including literature and case law research, the preparation of presentations, memo’s and research for internal and external publications).

As a law assistant, you will be able to participate fully in all of our educational and social programmes (both those which are practice specific, and those arranged for the whole firm). You will also participate in our Introduction Day, and have the opportunity to meet other colleagues starting at the same time, in different roles across the firm. Ideally you will share a room with one of our lawyers, and may be able to accompany them to any court hearings and client meetings.

However, to ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of all of our employees (and to comply with national restrictions on working practice during the pandemic), remote working or a hybrid arrangement may be necessary. We use the latest tools and applications to connect, collaborate and work together and would ask for your flexibility and tenacity to embrace whatever the current remote or hybrid working arrangements may be at the time that you start.

The requirements

If you are:

  • a Master’s student with strong academic record;
  • eager and excited to learn;
  • meticulous and well-organised;
  • proactive and flexible;
  • interested in corporate law;
  • a great team-player;
  • enthusiastic and driven; and you have excellent Dutch and English language skills,

then we very much look forward to hearing from you.
